Artists' Biographies

DIAGO   Juan Roberto Diago Durruthy was born in Havana in 1971. In 1990 he graduated from Havana’s  San Alejandro Academy of Visual Arts.  Since then Diago received numerous national and international prizes and awards. He has been featured in solo and group shows throughout Cuba, Latin America, the United States, Canada and Europe. His works combine painting, collage and mixed media techniques, his themes frequently touch both on his identity as a contemporary Cuban, and as a man of African ancestry.  Diago's works are included in private collections world-wide. JOVER   Joel Jover Llenderosas was born in Nuevitas, Camaguey Province, Cuba, in 1953. He graduated from the Camaguey Professional School of Art in 1970. Jover, a member of the Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC), has been awarded numerous national prizes. While his works address a range of themes, a predominant one reflects aspects religiosity and spirituality as they exist throughout Cuban culture, blending Catholic with Afro-Cuban cults and imagery. Jover's works have been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Cuba and in many museums and galleries throughout Europe, the United States, South America and elsewhere, and are part of private collections world-wide. He lives and works in Camaguey. 

MONTEBRAVO   Jose Garcia Montebravo was born in Cienfuegos in 1953 and died there in 2010. A self-taught painter, he had his first solo exhibition in the early 1980's. Montebravo paints strong portrayals of religious figures, especially the orishas, or Santeria deities. Many of his paintings depict birds, animals and the lush Cuban plant life yet he paints with such strength and expression that they suggest allegorical or religious symbols as well. MENA   Born in Havana in 1961, Rigoberto Mena Santana graduated from the city’s Polytechnic Institute of Industrial Design in 1987 and studied at the San Alejandro Academy of Visual Arts until 1989. He is a member of the Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC). Mena’s mostly abstract painting and mixed media techniques explore the colors, textures and sensations of his native city. Since the early 1990’s, Mena’s body of work has been featured in solo and group shows in Cuba and various parts of Europe, the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.  Today his works are included in private art collections world-wide. 

SALVADOR  Salvador Gonzáles Escalona, born 1948 in Camagüey, is a painter, muralist and sculptor. while his work is known as "Afro-Cuban" style, Salvador himself describes it as a mix of surrealism, cubism and abstract art. Without any formal training he had his first art exhibition , "Arte Popular Cubano", in the "Museo de Artes Decorativas" in Havana, in 1968. Since the mid-1980’s he has had exhibitions and commissioned works featured not only I Cuba but in Europe and in Latin and North America, including New York and Philadelphia. In 1990 Salvador began murals and sculptures in the Callejón de Hamel alleyway near the University of Havana. For sculptures he used scrap objects like bathtubs, hand pumps, pin wheels. For murals he used any kind of available paint, including car enamel. Despite initial difficulties he was inspired by local inhabitants and visitors to continue his work, and little by little, the street was transformed from a slum area to into an Afro-Cuban cultural space and street art gallery.

SANFIEL    Jorge Luis Sanfiel Cardenas was born in Santa Clara, Cuba, in 1963. Trained in the Soviet Union as an engineer and cartographer, on his return to Cuba Sanfiel dedicated his life to painting.An autodidact, Sanfiel is a member of the Unión Nacional de Escritores y Artistas de Cuba (UNEAC).       

ATIES    Daniel Aties Sans was born in Havana in 1970. A professional engineeer, he studied painting, sculpture, design and art history at the San Alejando Academy in Havana, and is now a full-time artist. He has had several one-man shows and participated in more than thirty group exhibitions to date. His works are included in private collections in the United States, Canada and Europe. 

COPPERI     Luis Alberto Pérez Copperi was born in Cienfuegos, Cuba, in 1973, where he works today as an independent artist.  He has degrees in fine arts (from the Escuela Elemental de Artes Plásticas Rolando Escardó) and architecture (Universidad de Villa Clara). In recent years he has had a number of solo and group shows in Cuba. Copperi’s works are included in private collections in Cuba, Mexico, South America, the United States, Canada and Europe.
